Box breathing vs 4-7-8: which one should you use?

They are the two best known breathing techniques, and people often mix them up. Yet they don’t share the same rhythm or the same purpose: one helps you focus, the other helps you fall asleep.

Box breathing: 4 equal counts

Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4. The rhythm is steady and balanced: it calms you without making you sleepy. Box breathing is made for moments when you need a cool head: before a meeting, an exam, a decision.

4-7-8: an exhale twice as long

Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7, breathe out for 8. All the focus is on the long exhale, linked with rest. 4-7-8 breathing is the evening technique, to fall asleep or get back to sleep.

What if neither suits you?

If holds bother you, try prolonged exhalation (4 seconds in, 8 out, no pause). For a daily routine, coherent breathing is the most regular.

The easiest way is to try both: a few cycles are enough to feel which one suits you best, and when.
